Can someone explain the difference between a 2 for 1 and a 3 for 1 stock split?

Sure! In a 2 for 1 split, the number of shares doubles and the price of each share is half the original price. On the other hand, in a 3 for 1 split, the number of shares triples and the price of each share is a third of the original price. Hope that clears it up!

Its just how many shares you get for each one you owned before the split. Two or three in your example.
